Wizards release new City Edition jerseys showing elements of their early and recent franchise history

On Monday, the Washington Wizards released their new City Edition jerseys. They are one of the NBA s 30 “Moments Mixtape” uniforms, that incorporate elements of various jerseys the Wizards have worn in the past. Pusha T narrated a video of the release earlier this morning. At first glance, the jersey looks like the 1970s version when the Bullets won the championship, with the current “Washington” wordmark along with numbering from the jerseys from the late 90s and 2000s, the first time the Wizards have reintroduced elements of the “Teal and Gold” or the Gilbert Arens era since changing the color scheme to red, white and blue. In another release by Jackson Wilyo of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the process to make the jersey took about two years between the Wizards, the NBA and NIke, according to MSE Chief Marketing Officer Hunter Lochmann. Here are some of the additional elements of past uniforms on this one:A patch of franchise great Wes Unseld s whose signature, number and year of his All-Star selections is on the bottom of the jersey. The words ROY and MVP are on the vents of each side of the shorts, in honor of the 1968-69 season when he won the NBA Rookie of the Year and MVP awards in the same season. There is a DMV logo on the left side of the shorts that is reminiscent of the Gilbert Arenas Era. On the right, the “DC hands” logo is on, but with a look closer to the Bullets of the 1960s and 1970s. The outline of the jerseys is in gold and white trim, most reminiscent of the Arenas Era. The Monumental ball logo on the front belt of the shorts is redesigned to make it look more retro. There also seems to be a couple of things apparent with the Wizards approach to its most recent franchise players before Bradley Beal, namely Arenas and John Wall.

Premier League鈥檚 US broadcast revenues soar with NBC deal

The Premier League has sold the rights to screen its football matches in the US to Comcast s NBC for about $2.7bn over six years, almost tripling the value of its existing contract with the broadcaster and reinforcing its dominance over rival European leagues.England s top-tier league, which makes more money than any of its big rivals in Germany, Italy and Spain, said on Thursday it would continue its partnership with NBC, which has bought the rights to all 380 matches each season from 2022-28.A person with knowledge of the agreement said it valued the rights at about $2.7bn, a big increase on the previous $1bn contract signed in 2015, demonstrating broadcasters demand for live sports as cable companies face increasing competition from Netflix and other streaming services. The deal shows the league s continued ability to increase broadcast revenues, a welcome boost to its 20 clubs as they look to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, compete against rivals for star players, and attract global audiences to the sport. It is also a sign of the Premier League s growing appeal in the US, where football traditionally struggled to compete for airtime in a market dominated by American football, basketball and baseball.“NBC Sports has significantly strengthened the popularity of the league in the United States in that time through its fantastic coverage and promotion,” said Richard Masters, chief executive of the Premier League.“You used to go to midtown Manhattan and you saw people with MLB jerseys or NBA jerseys. Now, it s not uncommon to see Arsenal or Liverpool jerseys at the same level,” said Jon Miller, president of programming for NBC Sports. “It s a very young sport, and it s a very hot sport. I think [soccer] is much more accepted.”Miller told the FT that the new price reflected how the “value has gone up”.“The [Premier League] has proven itself to be incredibly valuable in the US. We re comfortable moving forward because we know this will continue to be a success for us”, he said. The broadcaster, which has been the league s US partner since 2013, won the auction against rival bidders ViacomCBS and Disney s ESPN. The competition was such that the final sum paid surpassed the $2bn mark previously reported by the Financial Times.“NBC Sports Premier League Mornings programming is now a real institution among supporters in America, with fans getting up early to come together and cheer on their favourite club week in, week out,” Masters added. The time difference means Premier League matches are screened in the morning in the US, meaning that there is less competition against domestic sports.

Where Do This Year鈥檚 City Edition Jerseys Rank in Wolves History?

Each season, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the rest of the NBA come up with an alternate or “city edition” jersey to accompany the traditional set of uniforms. In early November, the Wolves introduced their city edition jersey for the 2021-22 NBA season. It is a mix of a few different jerseys throughout Minnesota s history. Notably, a mix between the fan favorites of the original blue jerseys and the tree jerseys. This city edition uniform features the inaugural blue, green and white colors and features the iconic trees and a wordmark remix. It also incorporates the original logo to the current one. It offers the long-asked-for original color scheme along with the trees, providing the best of both worlds. As a result, it is one of the best alternate jerseys the Wolves have ever created.Last Monday against the Phoenix Suns, the Wolves wore these city edition jerseys for the second time this season. They are scheduled to wear them 17 more times before the year concludes. Now that we ve seen these jerseys on the court, it got us thinking of some of the best uniforms Minnesota has created. Where do this year s city edition jerseys rank among others throughout the organization s history?Although it was a fun list to come up with, it was tough to choose and rank just five. Coming in at No. 5 is the baby blue MSP city edition jerseys that the Wolves donned during the 2019-20 season. They offered a different look and color scheme than what we ve seen from the organization throughout its history.According to the team website, these jerseys were created with the idea of celebrating people, places, art, food, music, and culture that make up the Twin Cities. The baby blue color of these jerseys, which closely resemble the look of the old Minneapolis Lakers jerseys, were eye-popping, immaculate, and simple. These uniforms gave us a different look than the regular rotation of jerseys during that season.Overall, these were some of the best city edition uniforms the Wolves have created. They mixed a bit of history with the contemporary look of the team.Although the 2021-22 city edition jerseys have only been worn a few times by the Wolves this season, these uniforms are already one of the top jerseys the organization has introduced. They knocked it out of the park with this design. With the combination of the color scheme, tree design, and old-school wordmark and numbers, this design is one that fans have been clamoring for since the NBA debuted the city edition uniform concept. If the Wolves decided to keep a city edition uniform for more than one season, this would be the one. Overall, this jersey mixes every aspect of Wolves history and will go down as one of the best the organization has created.Speaking of a new look and a bit of a change from the traditional color scheme, the Prince city edition jerseys from the 2018-19 season were flat-out awesome. Prince s estate approved them, and they honored the late Minnesota music icon Prince following his passing in 2016.The purple didn t fit the Wolves standard color scheme. But the organization nailed the design, representing a combination of music, basketball, culture, and legacy that resides in the state. According to the team website, the design of this jersey was inspired by and meant to represent the legacy of Prince. They designed the patterns, wordmark fonts, and the iconic Prince purple based on “Purple Rain.” These jerseys were a great way to honor a Minnesota legend. They offered a different look than what we re used to seeing. The only downside was we only saw the team wear these jerseys eight times during the 2018-19 season.Often when you think of the Wolves and their history of jerseys, the first one that comes to mind is the fan-favorite black tree jerseys. The team wore them from 1996-2008 and brought them back in 2018-19 as the classic edition uniform to honor its 30th anniversary. These jerseys bring back a ton of great memories from Minnesota s history. Most notably, some of the most successful seasons ever with Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett leading the way. Many of us grew up watching the Wolves or attending games while they donned this jersey, making this one of the best jerseys in team history. If the NBA were to eventually offer teams the opportunity to have a permanent throwback or historical jersey, this should be the one. The black tree uniforms are right there as the best jerseys ever. They may even be among the top jerseys in league history as well. The original blue-and-green uniforms were one of two jerseys the Wolves wore from 1989-96. It is the best jersey the organization has ever had.Part of the reason it is No. 1 on the list is just strictly because they are the originals and are a symbolic part of Wolves history. The color scheme is one that many fans have wanted the organization to go back to, which they incorporated into the 2021-22 city edition jerseys. The original blue, green and white color scheme is both basic and eye-grabbing at the same time, and the design is just as simple and not over-done, unlike many jerseys in that era. And the old-school logo is fantastic. These jerseys, which were the first the Wolves ever wore, are iconic. To this day, fans still wear throwback merchandise resembling this look and these jerseys. When it comes to the top jersey in franchise history, this one is hands-down No. 1 on the list.

New Orleans Pelicans Still Searching For Identity With City Edition Jerseys

Ben Hales (Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer for the New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans) and Jen Martindale (Vice President, Brand Strategy at New Orleans Saints and New Orleans Pelicans) recently gave me a detailed look into the marketing strategy and approach of the Pelicans during an interview responding to some fan concerns. Hales and Martindale gave an inside look into how the City Edition jerseys were created and what to expect in the future during that conversation. Addressing the 2021-22 City Edition jerseys serving as the newest visual marketing gracing the court Hales said, “It s not like the NBA and Nike say ‘Go do what you want to. They give us parameters and that was a theme that they had they were trying to push. From the beginning, we were trying to tell them ‘We love it. We understand what you are trying to do but our history is eight years old...It s a challenge to find something that people love. When we start doing those a couple of years out, there are some you have a lot more confidence that are going to hit than others. I m going to reserve judgment until we get through the end of the year to see how the fans feel about that once they ve had a chance to experience them on-court a little bit more.” He feels that it s better to judge these things once receipts from the fans store are in and with Zion Williamson on the team, the Pelicans sell plenty of jerseys. Even one s described as ‘simplistic by local media.

Rams will wear a new uniform combination vs. 49ers

The Rams unveiled their new “modern throwback” jerseys this offseason, an alternate uniform set to go with their royal jerseys and off-white Bone threads. They ve worn them twice this season, each time with yellow pants. However, when the Rams take the field against the 49ers on Monday night, they ll wear their modern throwbacks with royal pants – the first time they ve ever worn this combination. It won t look terribly different from their Bone-and-royal set, but the white-and-yellow throwbacks are far better than the Bone jerseys, so it will definitely be an upgrade. The Rams revealed their uniform choice in the team s official app this weekend. The 49ers will also be wearing a uniform combination that s new for 2021. They ll rock throwback red jerseys to celebrate their 75th season in the NFL, which they ve worn twice so far this season. It ll make for an aesthetically pleasing matchup between the Rams and 49ers at Levi s Stadium tonight. To leave a comment, you will need to Sign in or create an account if you already have an account. Y-H Spissue: Four former Elis鈥?paths to the NFL

Over the last six years, several bulldogs have traded their blue and white jerseys for the many colors of NFL team gear. For Tyler Varga 15, 2015 was a big year. Not only did he graduate from Yale with a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, but he also joined the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. Three years later, in 2018, two additional Elis joined the NFL. Foyesade Oluokun 18 and Jaeden Graham 18 remained teammates; Oluokun was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL draft, while Graham was also picked up by the Falcons as an undrafted free agent. Then, in 2020, the Chicago Browns selected Dieter Eiselen 20 in the “eighth round” post-draft period. “Our players go on to do some pretty amazing things,” Yale football head coach Tony Reno told the News in 2020. “All Yale students do, but to have [Oluokun and Graham] playing professionally is awesome for us. We re really excited for them and their journeys journeys that were both a little different.”While they all transitioned from the Yale Bowl to the Big Stage, each Eli took a different path to the national league.Tyler Varga originally played for University of Western Ontario before joining the Bulldogs for his sophomore year in 2012 as a tailback. As an Eli, Varga was one of the most successful rushers in Yale history. Varga put up 2,985 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns the fourth- and third- most in program history, respectively. The Finnish-Canadian was named Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year his final season. After graduation, Varga joined the Indianapolis Colts. Due to a severe concussion in his third game, Varga was out for the season. As a result, Varga decided to put his health first and retire from the NFL after just one season with the Colts. At the time, Varga told the Indy Star, “Thank God I went to Yale.” He now works as a senior investment analyst at ARC Financial Corp. The St. Louis native was one of the highest-rated recruits in Missouri during his high school career as a linebacker at John Burroughs School. He received offers from Harvard, Yale and Penn; naturally, he chose the Blue and White. In his first season as a Bulldog in 2013, Oluokun led the rookies in the Ivy League with 60 tackles. As an Eli, Oluokun was granted an extra year of NCAA eligibility to play football after he suffered from a pectoral tear in his chest during Week 3 of his junior season. During his red-shirt senior season in 2017, Oluokun completed nine tackles and a sack against Harvard, limiting the Crimson to just three points and securing the Bulldogs Ivy League title. After Yale, the six-foot-two linebacker participated in drills at Pro Day with 20 NFL scouts. He also attended several pre-draft visits with NFL teams. The Falcons drafted him in the sixth round, as the 200th overall pick of the NFL draft.“I viewed myself as an undrafted free agent, especially because I came out of a small school, so I wasn t sure how much film they had watched of me,” Oluokun told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution after a training camp session in August 2020. “They didn t know I had that much grit at Yale, which was all we preached there. I was ready to do whatever it took to make the team.” As a member of the Falcons defense, Oluokun became the first rookie since Keanu Neal in 2016 to record 89 tackles in a single season, the fourth-most tackles by a rookie in Falcons history. He is currently a starter for Atlanta in his fourth season with the team. Also on the Falcons roster is Jaeden Graham. As a multi-sport athlete in high school, Graham had to choose whether to pursue baseball or football at the collegiate level. He ended up favoring the pigskin and the Bulldogs. After two lackluster seasons with the Elis, coaches switched Graham s position from offensive linebacker to tight end. Although it took him a season to get a hold of the new position, Graham “simply redefined the position of tight end for us at Yale” during his senior season, Reno told the News in 2020.He led all Ancient Eight tight ends that year with four receiving touchdowns, 26 receptions and 380 yards. As a result of his historic season, Graham was named First Team All-Ivy League and First Team All-ECAC. “Jaeden has an incredible story of perseverance,” Kurt Rawlings 20 –– quarterback for the 2017 Yale team –– said in 2020. “You certainly do not become an All-Ivy and NFL tight end in one season out of luck.”Graham s hard work did not end after graduation. He managed to work his way into NFL mini-camps with the Oakland Raiders, Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons. Graham signed onto the practice squad with the Falcons as an undrafted free agent.During his rookie 2019 season with the Falcons, Graham stepped in after their starting tight end, Austin Hooper, was injured. In the two weeks he started, Graham obtained five catches for 94 yards and a touchdown. During his 16 games in the season of 2020, Graham contributed on offense and special teams, resulting in three receptions for 25 yards. In his two complete seasons in the NFL, Graham played in 32 games, recording 12 receptions for 174 yards and one touchdown. Currently, Graham is on the injury reserve list for the Atlanta Falcons due to a knee injury.Prior to Yale, the South African grew up playing rugby. After graduating from high school, he contacted a variety of preparatory schools in the United States to see if they would accept him for a 5th year so he could play football. Choate Rosemary Hall accepted him, and Eiselen helped lead the team to the 2015 NEPSAC Championship game. In his second official year of competitive football, the six-foot-four, 300-pound Yale first-year made an impact at his position as a linebacker. In his sophomore year, Eiselen was a game-changer for the Elis, playing a vital role in running back Zane Dudek s 21 historic year of leading the league in every rushing and scoring category. Eiselen earned All-Ivy Honorable Mention the same year. For his success in his junior season, Eiselen was named Second Team All-Ivy League and Phil Steele First Team All-Ivy League. Eiselen continued to thrive with the Bulldogs and helped Yale finish out his collegiate career first in total offense in the Ancient Eight. For his efforts in his final season, Eiselen made First Team All-Ivy and the AP All-American Third Team. Additionally, he was selected to play in the NFL Players Association Collegiate Bowl, which is a premier showcase for draft-eligible talent. During the game in January 2020, Eiselen helped the National Team squad to a 30-20 win as an offensive lineman. The Chicago Bears recognized Eiselen s athleticism and talent, and picked him up as an undrafted free agent shortly after the 2020 NFL draft.“I m extremely excited for the opportunity and ready to seize it by any means possible,” Eiselen told the News in 2020. “I cannot wait to get to work and push my mind and body beyond its limits.”Eiselen is currently in his second season with the Bears, where he played in two games.

Miami Heat: How To Feel About The New 鈥淢ashup鈥?Jerseys?

For many years, the Miami Heat have come out strong with their jersey designs, sporting some of the best, if not the best looks in the NBA. Over the years, the Heat have had many popular jerseys that were definitely worth the buy. My personal favorites were the “White Hot” jerseys during the Big Three Era and any of the variations of the “Miami Vice” jerseys. The NBA revealed the new City Edition jerseys. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NBA, each team designed their jerseys based on the “Mashup” theme that tied together their franchise s history. The Miami Heat s jersey is shown below. I am usually a fan of the Heat jerseys. For a team that comes out with the best looking jerseys every year, this design just isn t working. I understand that they were going for the 75th anniversary theme, trying to combine elements from all their previous jerseys, but this looks like an arts and crafts project. Bleacher Report ranked the Miami Heat jerseys second-to-last in the NBA. Not everything is terrible about them though. I actually like how the Miami Heat logo looks with the different color combinations. I also like the fact that they come with the special twist, where the color and style combinations of the jersey numbers can be mixed into their own different pairings. That brings a unique jersey feature that we have never seen before. It is certainly possible that these new jerseys will grow on fans, like me, who are critical of the design. For now, they are not appealing to me. However, I would rather have the Heat win games than look nice.

Thunder Grateful to Be a Part of 75th NBA Season

For the 75th anniversary of the NBA, the league is rolling out fresh elements across various aspects of the game – a new logo for this season, a new game ball partner in Wilson, a tone-setting short film called “NBA Lane” and the announcement of the 75 greatest players in league history on Tuesday through Thursday of this week on TNT and ESPN. For the Thunder, which is entering its 14th season as an NBA franchise, a span that encompasses 19 percent of the total league years, the occasion is an opportunity to reflect on the pioneers who helped establish the game. It s also the chance to add to the legacy that has been built in the United States, Canada and around the globe. “It's a beautiful game,” said Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. “As soon as I heard that (it was the 75th season), I thought about all the great players I watched growing up. It just feels pretty special to be a part of this,” added fellow guard Ty Jerome. The Thunder began its NBA journey in Oklahoma City in the fall of 2008, soaring with an unheard-of, meteoric rise from a 23-win team in that first season to an incredible 50 wins the very next year. Since then, the Thunder has been one of the most formidable franchises in the entire league. Since New Year s Eve 2008, the first season in Oklahoma City, the Thunder has the second-best regular season winning percentage in the NBA and the seventh-best winning percentage in all of sports from the start of 2010 to the start of 2020. The Thunder has also finished with a winning percentage of .610 (equivalent to 50 wins) seven times dating back to the 2009-10 season, with only San Antonio (eight seasons) reaching that benchmark more during the same period. That first era of Thunder basketball in Oklahoma City also produced ten-straight seasons with a .500 or better record, one of just three teams to maintain such a record across those years (Houston, San Antonio).

Nuggets release new 鈥淐ity Edition Mixtape鈥?uniform for NBA鈥檚 75th season

The Denver Nuggets dropped a new uniform on Monday, and it s a compilation of some of the club s best looks. Rainbow, skyline, Maxie, light blue? How about mixing them all together and seeing what happens. While the Nuggets didn t begin life in the National Basketball Association, the uniform dubbed the “City Edition Mixtape” jersey is meant to celebrate the team s history and honor the 75th season of NBA hoops. “The iconic rainbow Tetris pattern returns on the sides, shorts and neckline. Maxie the Miner, the team s original mascot, dances on the belt buckle,” the team described the uniform in a press release. “The taping and waistbands are remixed from that 1994 Cinderella team. 鈥淪tephen Curry doesn鈥檛 have his jersey retired by Davidson yet鈥ecause he hasn鈥檛 graduated鈥? Mike Breen and Mark Jackson remonstrate at obsolete rule by fringe NCAA contenders

Warriors superstar Stephen Curry doesn t have his Davidson jersey retired, all because of an obsolete college rule In the last 10 years, one player has done to the league what no one else could manage to do. Wardell Stephen Curry II has revolutionized the NBA and changed the way teams approached the 3-point line. In the process of doing so, Curry has won quite a few accolades as well. He is a 3x NBA Champion, 2x NBA MVP, 7x NBA All-Star, 4x NBA First Team, and so much more. When all is said and done, Steph would have his jersey hanging from the Chase Center rafters, and a possible statue outside it. A few years ago, Steph had gotten his jersey retired by his high school Charlotte Christian. However, the same cannot be said about his alma mater Davidson. They have refused to retire his jersey, well at least until he fulfills one of their conditions.
